Jais Nielsen - religious or not?

Jais Nielsen who started out as a painter, got a revelation when living in Paris from 1911 - 1914. When visiting an exhibition of Persian ceramics at the Cluny Museum he got stunned by the sheer beauty of the works of the ancient masters. This "divine" experience altered his own career. Upon his return to Denmark in 1915 he started to work as a ceramicist. His preferred imagery became depictions from the Bible.

Jais always said that.."an artist does not create according to a manual, but listen to his heart and mind.
In this interview he admits for the first time to have inherited his lifelong passion for religion from his beloved mother. And if he was in any doubt when depicting the tales from The Old Testament he just took the phone and called her for advice. She knew her Bible to the core.
